With the introduction of the 2015 Jeep Renegade and it arriving in dealers soon the staff at Autoweek took it out for a mid-winter test drive. The newly designed Renegade will be here in Ottawa, Ontario at Ottawa Chrysler Jeep Dodge soon! Come in and make your order, to be the first in Ottawa to drive this funky, unique, off-road capable, winter driving machine!

What’s it like to drive?

Jeep brought us to a winter driving course just north of Montreal (and just south of Santa’s toy production facilities staffed by a non-union elf labor force) to try out the Renegade Trailhawk, which was equipped with studless winter tires. Our previous experiences with the Renegade were in sunny Malibu, Calif., but like ourselves, Jeep suspected that the Renegade was more likely to be pushed to the limit in the parts of North America that tend to be frozen solid during the winter months.

And the Renegade doesn’t mind the sort of weather when everything is frozen solid. Even before we got going on the course itself, complete with a skid pad, slalom course and a circuit with a variety of sharp corners, the Renegade negotiated winter rush-hour traffic with ease. The steering is responsive without being overly light, and the chassis still has that nimble feel that we remember from our first meeting with the Renegade last November. In Trailhawk trim, the pint-sized SUV still feels comfortable enough to be a long-distance highway cruiser, with very little road noise intruding into the cabin even with winter tires on. Wind noise is minimal as well, and there is no grinding or whirring sound from the 4×4 chassis even north of 65 mph. For a four-wheel-drive system, this one is pretty low-key, almost to the point of us forgetting it’s there on normal roads.

But there’s no forgetting four-wheel drive when it’s time to hit the figure-eight skid pad. The Renegade stayed impressively flat as we threw it sideways on the icy course, never really letting us lose control. ESC was minimally intrusive as we kept the Renegade sideways through the figure-eight; it didn’t cut power after the first powerslide, letting us recover with a nice helping of throttle. The Renegade stayed equally flat through the short slalom, rounding the cones with minimal body lean.

On the icy circuit, the Renegade stayed well-controlled at speeds approaching 70 mph across several inches of powder above 8 inches of ice. Its short wheelbase made course corrections easy to dial in, and it also helped the SUV get through the hairpin turns without going too wide.

Next up was the off-road course, with several steep hills to attempt. We’d taken the Renegade on an off-road course before, and it had proven itself easy to drive — but that was when the temperature was well above freezing. Out in the frozen tundra, the Trailhawk was just as sure-footed as it climbs a few mounds, and with the short approach and departure angles we were easily able to scale 33 percent grades of frozen dirt. The Renegade’s hill-descent control did all the work as the mini-SUV descended from the 20-foot-tall mounds of dirt and ice, with ABS brakes letting us down easily.

In a segment flooded with premium-priced small SUVs that can barely scurry up a slick driveway with their all-season tires mounted on manhole cover-sized wheels, the unpretentious, funky-styled Renegade is a breath of fresh arctic air.

Spring is soon, but it is not here yet. We might have a few more harsh weather days left, and its better to be prepared for them, and we can guarantee that next winter will be the same.

Ottawa Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM offfers a wide selection of powertrain options to get you through all the weather the Ottawa climate can through at you.

The FCA US LLC vehicle lineup is designed to get drivers where they need to go, whether their routes are caked with slush or pockmarked by muddy craters.
They might even save some fuel along the way. More importantly, they’re likely to have fun.

“Intrepid and adventurous character is baked into our vehicles,” said Jeff Lux, Vice President – Transmission Powertrain, FCA – North America. “It has to be, because our customers have places to go. Our all-wheel-drive and 4×4 systems are engineered to help them arrive at their destinations safely and efficiently, using the right technologies – some of which have redefined the industry landscape.”

FCA US is a global leader in axle-disconnect and active-transfer-case technologies, with exclusive applications in multiple segments spanning cars, SUVS and pickups.
“Our systems invite driver confidence,” Lux added. “That’s the foundation of a superior ownership experience.”

For every operating condition and customer desire, there is a corresponding FCA US all-wheel-drive (AWD) or 4×4 system. Here’s the rundown:

Front-wheel-drive-based AWD systems
The FWD-based 2015 Chrysler 200 is the first mid-size sedan to feature complete rear-axle disconnect, which reduces energy loss to improve fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between front- and all-wheel drive for full-time torque management and does not require input from the driver.

The available AWD system uniquely disconnects and reconnects the rear axle – automatically and seamlessly – as needed and at any speed. On its own, the system accounts for a parasitic loss reduction of up to 80 percent compared with competitive part-time AWD systems, which are limited by conventional technology.

The power transfer unit (PTU) and rear-drive module (RDM) are the lynchpins of the system, which proactively engage and then disengage depending on road and environmental conditions. This dramatically reduces spin losses.

As a result, components that would normally contribute to the greatest parasitic loss – driveshaft, ring/pinion, input clutch plates, servo-hydraulic pump assembly and planetary gear sets – are all stationary when the vehicle is in front-wheel drive.

When AWD is engaged, the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 sedan benefits from improved traction and enhanced driving dynamics. Sensors gather vehicle data that compel sophisticated controls to smoothly distribute torque fore and aft as required.

System triggers range from road-surface changes to electronic stability control (ESC) activation. As much as 60 percent of available torque can be transferred to the rear wheels, contributing to a total driving experience that reassures while also igniting passion.

The experience is further intensified when Sport mode is engaged, leveraging the AWD system’s full capabilities, the benefits of ESC and the unique character of the available award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine.

* * *

The available AWD system in the front-wheel-drive-based 2015 Dodge Journey provides added traction on snow, ice and other low-traction surfaces by transferring power to the wheels without grip.

To accommodate reduced fuel consumption, the system drives only the front wheels – unless wheel-slip is detected. When this occurs, power is automatically split between front and rear.

Electronically controlled coupling (ECC) is at the heart of the system’s capability. In contrast, viscous-coupling or gerotor systems require some degree of front-to-rear slip before torque is transferred to the rear wheels.

The AWD Dodge Journey’s electronic control module works with the vehicle’s electronic-stability-control (ESC) and traction-control systems by using ECC to help optimize the amount of torque transmitted to the rear wheels.

At speeds greater than 53 miles per hour (mph), the control strategy provides minimal torque to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions to provide better fuel economy.

Rear-wheel-drive-based AWD systems
The redesigned, rear-wheel-drive-based 2015 Chrysler 300 features an available AWD system capable of responding to as much inclement weather as Mother Nature can dish out.

The system integrates a segment-exclusive active transfer-case and front-axle-disconnect technologies that not only enhance handling and control, but also afford greater fuel efficiency. No other major automotive manufacturer offers the combination of these two independent technologies.
The 300’s advanced AWD system seamlessly transitions between RWD and AWD with no driver intervention. The system automatically disconnects and reconnects the front axle to maximize fuel economy, contributing to a highway rating of 27 miles per gallon (mpg) – best-in-class among mainstream-brand full-size cars with AWD.

* * *

Whether winding through twisty stretches of a coastal road, to escaping away to a snow-covered ski resort, the AWD-equipped 2015 Dodge Charger is at home. It also shares bragging rights with the Chrysler 300 as the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class for highway driving
(27 mpg).

Dodge Charger’s intelligent AWD system benefits from the same segment-exclusive active transfer case and front-axle-disconnect technologies as the 300. However, the system combines with the Charger’s specially tuned suspension to reflect the brand’s characteristic performance-oriented feel.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the 2015 Charger Pursuit Police Package. As with the RWD version, the AWD model delivers best-in-class acceleration, including 0-to-60 mph in less than six seconds.

* * *

The 2015 Dodge Durango’s rear-wheel-drive-based drivetrain is the foundation for its outstanding on-road driving performance. But that performance is further enhanced by an available, full-time AWD system, which leverages the brawny SUV’s nearly 50/50 weight distribution.

While competitors have switched to front-wheel-drive car-based platforms, the HEMI®-powered AWD Durango features a low-range transfer case with a neutral position.

Low range improves light off-road performance and helps ease maneuvers, such as pulling a boat up a steep launch or backing up with a trailer.

The neutral position in the transfer case allows the vehicle to be flat-towed without damaging powertrain components.

It benefits from three separate open differentials – one in its transfer case and one in each of its axles. This combined with brake-traction control, electronic stability control (ESC) and an antilock braking system (ABS), affords exceptional performance in inclement weather.

Front-wheel-drive-based 4×4 systems
The 2015 Jeep Cherokee offers customers a choice of three innovative 4×4 systems for best-in-class 4×4 capability in all weather conditions. The Jeep Cherokee is the first mid-size SUV to feature rear-axle disconnect, which benefits fuel economy by reducing the energy loss normally associated with deactivating 4×4 mode.

The rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between two- and four-wheel-drive for full-time torque management and does not require driver input. The Cherokee’s three systems are:

  • Jeep Active Drive I
    • Available on the Cherokee Sport, Latitude and Limited models, Jeep Active Drive I features a single PTU, which is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed. The system does not require any driver intervention or feedback, delivers yaw correction during dynamic events and improves both understeer and oversteer conditions. Jeep Active Drive I offers balanced torque distribution with brake traction control. The four-wheel-drive performance results from a fully variable wet clutch housed in the rear drive module. The clutch supplies the proper amount of torque for any driving condition, including slippery conditions, aggressive starts and dynamic driving. Sophisticated controls enable the system to contribute to the driving dynamics while interacting with the electronic stability control (ESC) system when approaching the traction limits of the road surface.
  • Jeep Active Drive II
    • Available on the Cherokee Sport, Latitude and Limited models, Jeep Active Drive II includes a two-speed PTU with torque management and low range. 4-Low mode locks the front and rear drive shafts for low speed power or towing. Low range provides a 2.92:1 gear reduction. The gear reduction allows for enhanced climbing ability as well as outstanding crawl ratios for severe off-road conditions. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee with Jeep Active Drive II gives the off-road adventurer a crawl ratio of 56:1 when powered by the 2.4-liter MultiAir2 Tigershark I-4 engine, and 47.8:1 when powered by the new 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, which is as much as a 90-percent improvement versus the outgoing Liberty. Jeep Active Drive II works in conjunction with the Selec-Terrain system to aggressively modify the torque distribution while monitoring the engine transmission and ESC system, providing power to the wheels that will deliver the most traction.
  • Jeep Active Drive Lock
    • Jeep Active Drive Lock includes all the features of Jeep Active Drive II and adds a locking rear differential for superior low-speed power for rock crawling or severe off-road conditions. The locking rear differential is selectable in any low-range terrain mode, but will lock automatically when in certain modes, such as “Rock,” to maximize tractive effort, which the tire patch can support. Jeep Active Drive Lock is standard on all Trailhawk models.Selec-Terrain traction control allows the driver, with a push of a button, to choose the appropriate on- or off-road setting for optimum performance. It electronically coordinates and optimizes up to 12 systems on any terrain, providing enhanced vehicle control through the drivetrain control module, electronic brake controller, ESC, transmission controller, powertrain controller and Selec-Speed Control (Hill-ascent and Hill-descent Control).

Selec-Terrain modes are:

Auto

  • Standard Drive mode
  • Standard electronic brake controls
  • Automatically detects need for four-wheel-drive engagement
  • Front/rear torque split is fully active and variable depending on the driving conditions

Sport

  • For enhanced on-road driver control
  • Traction control is limited
  • ESC slip thresholds are raised
  • Driveline torque bias for improved cornering
  • Allows for a target front/rear torque split of up to 40/60 percent

Snow

  • Second gear launch
  • For use in inclement weather
  • Slick surface electronic brake controls
  • Full-time four-wheel drive
  • Allows for a target front/rear torque split of up to 60/40 percent

Sand/Mud

  • For enhanced driver control in off-road conditions
  • Off-road electronic brake controls
  • Full-time four-wheel drive
  • Allows for a front/rear torque split of up to 100 percent rear

Rock (available with Jeep Active Drive Lock)

  • For use on obstacles
  • Off-road electronic brake controls with increased brake lock differential capacity
  • Available in 4-Low only
  • Allows for a front/rear torque split of up to 100 percent rear

In addition, the ESC system will change mode in coordination with the Selec-Terrain mode chosen:

  • ESC remains full on with Auto and Snow modes
  • ESC is off when in 4-Low
  • ESC is in Partial mode for Sport, and Sand/Mud modes

Partial mode means aid from traction control and stability control are reduced, but anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic roll mitigation remain fully enabled In 4-Low, the Selec-Terrain system shifts front and rear axles to a 2.92:1 gear set for increased torque and control off-road.

When in neutral, the 2015 Jeep Cherokee equipped with Jeep Active Drive II disconnects the driveline for flat towing behind another vehicle, such as a recreational vehicle (RV).

The all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade offers a choice of two innovative driveline systems for best-in-class 4×4 capability in all weather conditions. Both systems are first-time applications, designed to accommodate the Renegade’s new “small-wide 4×4” architecture.” A rear-axle disconnect system delivers 4×2 levels of fuel-efficiency and instantly engages 4×4 when additional traction is needed.

Both systems automatically and seamlessly switch between 4×2 and 4×4 for full-time torque management and optimal traction when required.

Jeep Active Drive
Enabled by an innovative PTU, Jeep Active Drive is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation in and out of four-wheel drive, and at any speed. This system requires no driver intervention, delivers yaw correction during dynamic events and improves both understeer and oversteer conditions. Jeep Active Drive can provide up to 1,475 lb.-ft. (2,000 N•m) of the engine’s available torque to the rear wheels, enabling optimal grip in low-traction conditions. A fully variable wet clutch housed in the rear-drive module utilizes the Jeep brand’s proprietary controls to provide the proper amount of torque for any driving condition, including low-traction surfaces, aggressive starts and dynamic driving.

Jeep Active Drive Low
Providing the all-new Renegade Trailhawk with best-in-class off-road capability, Jeep Active Drive Low builds on the Jeep Active Drive system and affords a 20:1 crawl ratio for 4×4 Trail Rated capability.

Jeep Active Drive and Active Drive Low feature the brand’s Selec-Terrain traction-control system. Selec-Terrain allows the driver to dial in the desired on- or off-road setting for optimum performance.

Up to five customized settings are offered: Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud, and exclusively on the Trailhawk model’s Jeep Active Drive Low system, Rock mode. For even greater Trail Rated off-road capability, Selec-Terrain includes Selec-Speed Control with Hill-descent Control.

The 2015 Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot offer customers a choice of two 4×4 systems: one that affords robust on-road performance, and another that delivers segment-topping off-road capability.

Jeep Freedom Drive I 4×4 is an available full-time, active four-wheel-drive system with lock mode designed to give drivers year-round assurance with the ability to handle rough weather and low-traction conditions. This active four-wheel-drive system is recommended for daily use, including slick conditions that come with rain and light snow.

Freedom Drive I also features a lockable center coupling, giving drivers the ability to put the Jeep Compass in four-wheel-drive lock mode to handle deep snow, sand and other low-traction surfaces.

The Jeep Freedom Drive II 4×4 Off-road Package is an available four-wheel-drive system that delivers Jeep Trail Rated capability in Compass form. The Freedom Drive II Off-road Package includes a second-generation continuously variable transaxle with low range (CVT2L) that engages when the off-road mode is activated, 17-inch all-terrain tires and aluminum wheels, a one-inch raised ride height, a full-size spare tire, skid plates, tow hooks, fog lamps and manual seat height adjuster.

The available Freedom Drive II Off-road Package is recommended for off-road situations that include steep grades, occasional wheel lift and rock or log climbing.

Rear-wheel-drive-based 4×4 systems
Power is most effective when properly distributed. So Ram’s 4×4 systems are engineered accordingly with robust, premium axle and transfer-case technologies.

Two transfer cases are available on the 2015 Ram 1500: the 44-45, which enables part-time four-wheel-drive (4×4) operation with a two-speed gear system; and the 44-44, which enables on-demand 4×4 functionality, also via a two-speed gear system.

Depending on other equipment choices, the transfer cases are engaged with either a dash-mounted rotary dial or dash-mounted buttons.

The part-time transfer case delivers three operating ranges: 2HI (two-wheel drive), 4HI (four-wheel drive) and 4LO (low-range reduction four-wheel drive) plus a neutral position.

The 2HI is designed for any road surface at any time. Both 4HI and 4LO are for off-road use or slick surfaces. Operating modes may be switched between 2HI and 4HI while the vehicle is in motion, but the vehicle’s transmission must be in neutral to engage 4LO.

The low-range reduction ratio for 4LO is 2.64:1, which provides increased low-speed torque capability for pulling power in off-road conditions.

The on-demand transfer case affords drivers the flexibility to choose from four operating ranges: auto, 2HI, 4HI and 4LO. Auto provides optimum versatility by automatically providing 4WD traction, depending on road conditions.

Driveshafts incorporate 1350-series universal joints, two-piece thrust washers with triple-lip seals and improved journal cross-strength.

Four-wheel-drive models offer three final-drive ratios: 3.21, and 3.55 and 3.92, which are available on both the 2WD and 4WD models. This affects engine rpm throughout the operating range for better fuel economy.

Four-wheel-drive models of the Ram 1500 also use a front axle designed for optional air suspension or standard torsional independent front suspension, incorporating half-shafts that drive front hubs. For improved fuel economy, the axle also has a disconnect system that automatically disengages when four-wheel-drive is disengaged.

In addition, an optional helical-gear, limited-slip rear axle is available. The limited-slip function instantaneously divides torque between the rear wheels in proportion to the traction available to each wheel. The system is consistently smooth when turning corners because it responds only to variations in traction.

* * *

The 2015 Ram Power Wagon heavy-duty pickup is the most capable production off-road truck in its segment and boasts a part-time, manual-engagement 44-47 transfer case.

The Power Wagon’s axles are the pinnacles of durability. The units measure 9.25 inches in the front and 11.5 inches in the rear (increase from 10.5 inches), delivering power via a 4.10:1 ring and pinion ratio.

Robust rear axle shafts are upgraded to 38 mm, providing rotating force directly to the 33-inch tire/wheel combination. Both axles include electronic locking differentials driven by electro-magnetic actuators.

All Ram Heavy Duty pickups feature segment-exclusive front axle disconnect systems. When conditions warrant, front drivetrain components are disconnected to reduce parasitic loss and improve overall efficiency.

Two part-time transfer cases are available on the Ram Heavy Duty. The 44-46 is an electric shifting part-time transfer case with 2WD (two-wheel-drive), 4WD (four-wheel-drive) High, 4WD Low and Neutral; 44-47 is a manual shifting transfer case with 2WD, 4WD High, 4WD Low and Neutral.

Both options offer a low-range ratio of 2.64 and locking differential from front to rear.

* * *

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee features three available full-time 4×4 systems (Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II) and the Selec-Terrain traction management system.

Quadra-Trac I features a single-speed transfer case that accommodates full-time four-wheel drive – without any switches or levers to pull.

The Quadra-Trac II’s two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment. Then it takes corrective action.
When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra-Drive II, with a rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD), delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

* * *

With its live axles and electronic lockers, the 2015 Jeep Wrangler delivers unmatched off-road capability with legendary four-wheel drive and benefits from more than seven decades of 4×4 engineering experience.

The Jeep Wrangler is available with several axle gear ratios allowing customers to optimize fuel economy and/or vehicle capability. Wrangler is available with 3.21, 3.73 or 4.10 ratios depending on model. Also, Wrangler offers towing capability up to 3,500 pounds.

The capable driveline of the Sport and Sahara models feature a Dana 30 front axle and Dana 44 rear axle. The Command-Trac NV241, part-time, two-speed transfer case features a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio.

In addition, an optional Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip in low-traction environments such as sand, mud or snow.

The Wrangler Rubicon model features heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles and the Rock-Trac NV241 two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio. Rubicon also includes electric front and rear locking differentials, disconnecting front sway bar and 32-inch tires, taking the Wrangler to the highest level of capability.

All Jeeps can be equipped with systems that earn the brand’s celebrated “Trail Rated” badge, a symbol of its off-road performance in five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording.

Unsung heroes that are well worth a test drive

According to an article written by consumer reports; there are 5 great cars that are lurking under the radar screen, hidden from the limelight. They are not be the best selling in a given segment and may have been absent from any prestigious award ceremony, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider them. Why be part of the herd if you can make an informed, intelligent decision on your own? Daring to be different can have its rewards.

We have found five cars that merit special attention even though they may not be the most obvious choice or something your trend-setting neighbor in, Ottawa, Ontario, just parked on his/her driveway. In compiling this list, we not only looked at models that did well in our testing, but also factored feedback from owners who told us in significant numbers that they would definitely buy again.

Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger

After a freshening for 2015, these fraternal twins remain solid and competitive. The Chrysler 300 is comfortable, roomy, quiet, and capable cruiser that’s quite rewarding to drive. That shouldn’t be too surprising since it is derived from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class of two generations ago. If it had a more prestigious logo, the 300 could command $10,000 more. The V6 mated to the eight-speed automatic is the way to go, and all-wheel-drive is optional. It also doesn’t hurt that the UConnect infotainment system is one of the best in the business.

If you want to kick things up a notch, with a younger, more exuberant alternative, the related Dodge Charger provides a sportier experience. And if your conscience and wallet allow you to indulge in that unadulterated 5.7-liter Hemi V8, it is a certifiable four-door muscle car that can pamper without being too ostentatious. Fair warning: Both sedans have variable reliability that can dip below average for a given model year.

Other Notable mentions include the 2015 Mazda 3, 2015 Subaru Forester, 2015 Subaru Legacy, and the 2015 Volkswagon Passat.

The 2015 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300, are available in Ottawa, Ontatio, from the Dodge Headquarters located at 900 St. Laurent Blvd.; Ottawa Chrysler Jeep Dodge.

The 2015 Jeep Wrangler Is The Cheapest Car To Insure

$
0
0

Based on a survey that quoted 1,500 new vehicles with six major insurance companies, the 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sport was found to be the cheapest to insure.

“Insurance rates are all about claims- how many and how big,” says Penny Gusner, consumer analyst at Insure.com which commissions this survey every year. “Cars that are cheapest to insure typically are easy to repair or have fewer claims or both.”

Matt Moore of the Highway Loss Data Institute adds; “Collision and comprehensive insurance (premiums) are to a large extent driven by the cost of a vehicle.”

You might have worked that out on your own, but the list of factors that affect a vehicle’s insurance rate also includes how many miles it’s driven, safety features (both collision protectionand avoidance), and “the overall risk profile of the people who buy it” according toInsure.com‘s Jerry Kronenberg.

Edmunds.com‘s Scott Oldham speculates that’s why so many family cars get cheap insurance rates. “Many of these vehicles have children in them a lot of the time, so their owners drive accordingly.”

Where a car’s registered also affects its rate, to a shockingly extreme degree. A Chevrolet Traverse LT 2WD was quoted at $2,290 in annual insurance in Michigan, but just $766 in Maine for the same driver. That vehicle’s national average was $1,282.

So apparently the 2015 Jeep Wrangler fits in the ideal position of being cheap to buy, simple to work on, and typically sold to folks who don’t get in too many accidents. Of course the Wrangler gets expensive quickly when you move up in models, which is why only the base Sport made this list.

Here are the top ten cheapest, and top ten most expensive cars to insure in America along with their average premiums, according to Insure.com‘s survey:

Least expensive 2015 vehicles and their national average premium

  1. Jeep Wrangler Sport 4WD – $1,134
  2. Jeep Patriot Sport 2WD – $1,136
  3. Honda CR-V LX 4WD – $1,160
  4. Dodge Grand Caravan SE Plus – $1,162
  5. Honda Odyssey LX – $1,163
  6. Jeep Compass Sport 2WD – $1,164
  7. Subaru Outback 2.5i – $1,176
  8. Ford Edge SE 2WD – $1,176
  9. Smart FORTWO Pure – $1,186
  10. Ford Escape S 2WD – $1,190

Seven new, capable and fun Jeep concept vehicles – featuring a host of Mopar and Jeep Performance Parts available to consumers – are set to conquer the trails of Moab, Utah, at the 49th annual Easter Jeep Safari, taking place March 28-April 5.  The Easter Jeep Safari is attended by thousands of die-hard off-road enthusiasts, who each year enjoy a week of serious off-roading on some of the country’s most rugged and recognizable trails.

“Jeep is proud to be taking seven new eye-catching and extremely capable vehicles to the Easter Jeep Safari, where we expect to delight our most loyal enthusiasts,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand.  “We go to this legendary event each year to showcase our latest Jeep production vehicles, as well as a variety of new ideas in our concept vehicles.  In doing so, we receive a tremendous amount of valuable feedback, while interacting with our customers in the Jeep brand’s natural environment. We’re especially looking forward to this year’s Jeep Safari, as Renegade makes its official public debut on Moab’s demanding trails.”

This year’s collection of Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles were designed with a combination of production and prototype Jeep Performance Parts. Mopar designed, engineered, built and quality-tested the Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) line meeting strict Jeep specifications, with 4×4 capability and craftsmanship so owners can transform their stock rides into even more capable trail performers.

“The most enthusiastic off-roaders travel to Moab each year for this premier event, making Easter Jeep Safari the perfect place to showcase Jeep Performance Parts,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO – Mopar Brand Service, Parts and Customer Care. “Jeep owners are passionate about their vehicles and Mopar, with Jeep Authentic Accessories and Jeep Performance Parts, offers a full-line of products for them to express this passion through customization, making sure there is no other vehicle like theirs on the road.”

The seven new concept vehicles built for Moab this year were created by a small team of dedicated, passionate engineers, designers and fabricators that have been customizing production vehicles since 2002, and have introduced more than 50 concept vehicles for the enthusiasts who attend the popular Easter Jeep Safari.

The 2015 Easter Jeep Safari concept vehicles include:

Jeep Chief
A tribute to the classic 1970s era full-size Jeep Cherokee, this Wrangler-based concept vehicle evokes the west coast surfer lifestyle of sun and fun with a nod to nostalgic beach rides.

Custom exterior design cues include a vintage Ocean Blue exterior color scheme with a white, French Bread roof; a custom modified razor grille that the original Wagoneer made famous; halogen headlamps; removable sides for an open-air feel and flexible hauling; chrome front and rear bumpers and classic, 17-inch slotted mag wheels for a true ’70s vibe.

Jeep designers developed the Hawaiian themed interior complete with Jeep-designed “Surfer” pink, blue and white flowered cloth and leather-trimmed seats; vintage-style surf stickers on the center console and door handles; a Rosewood front-passenger grab handle and tiki-style shifter handle; and Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen media center.

The doors and windshield were chopped two inches and the Jeep Chief sports a selection of Jeep Performance Parts that include a two-inch lift kit with Fox shocks and front and rear Dana 44 axles with lockers, cold air intake and modified Rubicon rock rails. The Chief is powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Jeep Staff Car
The Jeep Staff Car was built as a salute to legendary Jeep military service vehicles.  The open-air Wrangler 4-door-based concept vehicle highlights rugged functionality with heritage design cues.  It looks historic and authentic, but is all new.

The function over form of the original Jeep military service vehicles is evident in the Staff Car.  Basic steel wheels, minimalist fender flares, “hungry horse” stretched canvas roof and bench seats all echo the original military Jeep vehicles.

The exterior features a Sandstorm exterior color scheme that is carried throughout the vehicle including the wheels, frame and axles. The Jeep Staff Car has no B-pillar and no doors. Jeep designers incorporated military-style round headlamps, Jeep J8 front and rear bumpers, fender-mounted blackout lamp with guards and a rear-mount spare tire and vintage military gas can. The Jeep Staff Car sits on 16-inch wheels with 35-inch Firestone NDT military tires.

The minimalist interior features low-backed bench seats in the first and second row, an integrated roll cage and a painted steel floor in place of carpet. A built-in cooler draws its inspiration from an old artillery box and accommodates 85 cans.

The Jeep Staff Car is powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The Staff Car has a Jeep Performance Parts 2-inch lift kit with Fox shocks and front and rear Dana 44 axles.

Jeep Wrangler Africa
The Africa is the ultimate Jeep Wrangler for back-country and overland expeditions, with room for extra gear and auxiliary fuel tanks.

The Wrangler 4-door-based vehicle sports a Desert Tan exterior paint, a high-clearance steel front bumper with winch, power step rock rails, power dome vented hood and an extended rear body and high-top roof. Powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine mated to an automatic transmission, the Wrangler Africa also features fender-mounted auxiliary fuel cans. The Africa sports 17-inch body color steel wheels with 35-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires.

The Jeep Wrangler Africa is outfitted with a two-inch lift kit with Fox shocks, sway bar links and front and rear Dana 44 axles from Jeep Performance Parts. The spare tire is underbody-mounted and the cargo area, inner roof and floor are finished in a durable spray-in truck bed coating.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Overlander
The Grand Cherokee-based Overlander concept vehicle represents the rough-and-tumble side of Grand Cherokee, a rugged and dependable vehicle customized for the enthusiast interested in overland expeditions where they travel and camp out of their vehicle.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Overlander sports Sage Green exterior paint. Custom features include a one-off front fascia, integrated front winch, tow hooks, larger wheel flares, SRT taillamps and hood, off-road rock rails, front and rear skid plates and 18-inch milled wheels with BF Goodrich All-terrain T/A tires.

The powertrain is the 3.0-liter diesel V-6 engine mated to the eight-speed Torqueflight transmission.

To top it off, the Grand Cherokee Overlander has a durable spray-in truck bed coating on the roof and a two-person hard-shell rooftop tent that is easily deployable.

Jeep Renegade Desert Hawk
The newest addition to the Jeep lineup, the Jeep Renegade, is the basis for the Desert Hawk concept vehicle, and is equipped with a selection of Mopar and Jeep Performance Parts for the ultimate desert adventure.

The Desert Tan exterior features a Jeep Performance Parts body decal, a topographical hood decal that depicts the Fins and Things Moab trail, off-road rock rails and a skid plate kit. Also featured are Mopar’s  trailer hitch receiver and roof rack.

On the interior, the Renegade Desert Hawk has been outfitted with Mopar Katzkin seat covers, body color bezel accents and Mopar all-weather floor mats.

The Renegade Desert Hawk is powered by the 2.4-liter Tigershark engine with MultiAir2 mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with Jeep Active Drive Low.

Jeep Cherokee Canyon Trail
The Canyon Trail concept vehicle is developed from the Jeep Cherokee, Four Wheeler Magazine’s “2015 Four Wheeler of the Year.”  In the spirit of that award, the Canyon Trail ups the Cherokee’s best-in-segment capability with Mopar and Jeep Performance Parts specifically designed for even more off-road prowess.

The Cherokee Canyon Trail’s Desert Tan exterior paint is accented with a Satin Black hood that includes a topographical hood decal showcasing Hell’s Revenge, a renowned off-road trail in Moab. The exterior also displays Jeep Performance Parts body decal, Satin Black roof accent colors and the 2015 “Four Wheeler of the Year” decal.

The Canyon Trail interior features Mopar Katzkin leather seat covers and accent stitching, Jeep Performance Parts embroidered logo on the headrests,  body color bezel accents, a cargo tray mat, Jeep Cargo Management System, Moab Off-road bag and all-weather floor mats.

Off-road capability is turned up with the addition of JPP off-road rock rails, a two-piece fuel tank skid plate, two-piece underbody skid plate, oil pan and front suspension skid plates, as well as concept 17-inch painted wheels with BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A tires, which provide an additional one-half inch of lift.

The Jeep Cherokee Canyon Trail is powered by the 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir2 I-4 engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with Jeep Active Drive Lock, which includes low range and a locking rear differential.

Jeep Wrangler Red Rock Responder
Based on the Jeep Wrangler, the Red Rock Responder is a support vehicle purpose-built to traverse the world’s harshest terrain with premium off-road equipment to respond to any vehicle emergency with spare parts and tools stored in the built-in drawers and compartments of the cargo box.

With a Vibrance Responder Red exterior paint, Jeep Performance Parts body decal, 10th Anniversary hood with hydraulic hood props, high-top fender flares and 17-inch beadlock wheels with body color beadlock ring, the Red Rock Responder stands out on any trail. In addition, the vehicle sports LED headlamps and foglamps, LED A-pillar and off-road lamps.

Functional capability is increased with the addition of 37-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2 tires, four inches of JPP lift, Fox shocks, and front and rear Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gearing from Jeep Performance Parts. The vehicle also sports a cold-air intake, prototype off-road rock rails and a Warn winch. Red Rock Responder is also armed with Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition steel front and rear bumpers and high-top fenders that were previously concept parts but quickly became a production part due to popular demand.

Side cargo boxes on each side of the vehicle hold a hi lift jack and accessories, fire extinguisher, road side accessory kit, first aid kit, Snap-on tool soft bags and recovery kit. It also stores an air hose and accessories, a dual compressor and air reservoir and has room for a cooler or a case of water.

The interior stands out along with the exterior with embroidered black and red Mopar Katzkin leather seats, Jeep Performance Parts logo embroidered on the headrests, red accent bezels, grab handles and all-weather floor mats.

The Jeep Wrangler Red Rock Responder is powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to an automatic transmission.

Editors at Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com honored four FCA vehicles with seven “top 10” awards for 2015 in Ottawa, Ontario.

The all-new 2015 Jeep® Renegade has been named one of KBB.com’s “10 Favorite New-for-2015 Cars” and “10 Best All-Wheel-Drive Vehicles Under $25,000.” The Jeep Renegade and 2015 Jeep Wrangler also made KBB.com’s “10 Best SUVs Under $25,000” list, while the 2015 Chrysler 200 nabbed a spot on the list of “10 Best Sedans Under $25,000.” In addition, KBB.com named the Jeep Wrangler and 2015 Fiat 500 two of its “10 Coolest Cars Under $25,000.”

When reviewing the 10 Best SUVs Under $25,000, editors at KBB.com said of the 2015 Jeep Renegade, “Jeep’s entry-level newcomer has been attracting attention with its charming, retro-modern looks, but it has a lot more to offer than style. The Renegade allows open-air driving, similar to its big-brother Wrangler, and the nimble compact is comfortable on the road, fuel efficient and capable of venturing off-road.”

Earning a spot on the 10 Best Sedans Under $25,000, the 2015 Chrysler 200 also received praise from KBB.com editors.

“Chrysler’s all-new stylish 200 comes onto the midsize sedan scene for 2015 with an elegant interior filled with plenty of appealing connectivity and entertainment options,” KBB.com editors said. “That, along with the car’s quiet, smooth ride makes this an enjoyable highway cruiser.”

In addition to being named one of the 10 Best SUVs under $25,000, the 2015 Jeep Wrangler was also chosen as one of KBB.com’s 10 Coolest Cars Under $25,000.

“For those souls more likely to blaze their own path than play follow the leader down a paved, well-worn strip of asphalt, the open-air, open-mind Jeep Wrangler is legendary for a reason,” KBB.com editors said.

The 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth also received accolades from KBB.com editors, making the list of 10 Coolest Cars Under $25,000.

“The Fiat 500 is a style-conscious small car with European flair,” KBB.com editors said. “But with the addition of a turbocharger and a sport suspension, Fiat’s little runabout turns into a little monster.”

Best Movies Featuring the Dodge Charger of all time!

$
0
0

Cars and movies go together like peanut butter and jam. The Dodge Charger, being one of the baddest muscle cars around has been a star in more movies then some actors.

From highway cruising to high speed chases, the Charger looks belongs on the big screen.

Here’s our list of the Charger’s best movie appearances.

1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 in Bullitt (1968)

In this heated cop drama, Steve McQueen plays Frank Bullitt, a San Francisco police officer who has been charged with protecting a witness for 48 hours until it’s time for him to testify.

However, the plot quickly thickens when a couple of hit men who manage to take out another officer and seriously wound the witness.

Steve McQueen is then bent on tracking down the bad guys in his Mustang, but the chase proves to be an epic one since the suspects are driving a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T.

According to Allpar.com, the cars actually hit speeds of up to 110 miles per hour during the chase scene.

Though the outcome would likely have been different in real life, McQueen did ultimately pin down the Charger because, well come on, it’s Steve McQueen.

But Bullitt set the trend for many films with Charger-driving bad guys to come.

1969 Dodge Charger R/T 440 in Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974)

In this wacky film, Crazy Larry is played by Peter Fonda, and his dream is to become a NASCAR driver. However, he needs to get enough cash together for his racing team to take off.

He decides the best way to handle the situation is to rob a supermarket and hit the road, but little does he know that a girl he had a one-night stand with, Dirty Mary, is hiding in the car.

As the scenario progresses, they end up stealing a 1969 Dodge Charger, and that’s when things get really wild. Thanks to the Charger R/T, they continue to stay one step ahead of the police cars and helicopter.

But unfortunately, the one nemesis they can’t beat is the freight train they run into near the end of the movie.

1968 Dodge Charger in Christine (1983)

Though this Stephen King thriller is best known for its leading red Plymouth Fury named Christine, a Dodge Charger also plays a significant role in the movie version.

The main character, Arnie, who goes on to become obsessed with Christine, first sees the car while driving around with his friend Dennis in a blue Charger.

There is still some debate about whether it was a ’68 or a ’69, and there have also been recent investigations into what happened to the used Dodge Charger after the movie was finished.

1970 Dodge Charger R/T in The Fast and the Furious (2001)

The Fast and the Furious features one of the most menacing Chargers ever filmed. This Charger is so bad that Vin Diesel, who plays a high level gang member named Dominic Toretto, won’t even drive it.

Dom explains to Paul Walker, who plays an undercover cop named Brian O’Connor, that the car just has too much power.

In a showdown between the two men, Dom overcomes his fear of the Charger and races in it, but the car nearly rips itself apart because of the massive amounts of torque it produces.

Ultimately, the he and Brian both finish the race, but of course, Dom crashes into a truck at the very end, destroying the Charger and severely injuring himself.

Wait for it; there’s one more plot twist. Though the Charger is no more, Brian gives Dom his car and sends him on his merry way. What a guy.

1967 Dodge Charger in Big Fish (2003)

In Big Fish, William Bloom tries to unravel his dying father Edward’s fantastical stories to determine which ones are real and which ones are just myths.

Throughout the film, a number of Edward Bloom’s life experiences are revisited. In several scenes, his adventures involve him driving a red 1967 Dodge Charger.

In one part of the movie, Edward and the car are even submerged under water after flash flooding from a rain storm. And in the morning, when he wakes up, his Charger is hanging from the top of a tree.

The sharp-looking fastback plays is the perfect match for Edward’s rather wild and sensational life story.

1969 Dodge Charger in Dukes of Hazzard (2005)

For many people, the Charger’s most memorable performance was as General Lee on the Dukes of Hazzard TV show.

Throughout the seven years that the series ran for, over 300 Chargers were used. Many were smashed up as part of the stunts, and watching some episodes is enough to make muscle car lovers cringe.

But everyone was happy to see the iconic car return for the Dukes of Hazzard film in 2005. Several ’68 and ’70 models were dressed up to look like the 1969 iteration of the Charger specifically for the movie.

Though the two cousins, Bo and Luke Duke are constantly getting into trouble with the law, their Charger, General Lee, always seems to help them escape when they’re on the run.

1969 Dodge Charger in Death Proof (2007)

In this psychological thriller that was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, a crazy stunt man named Mike (Kurt Russell) stalks attractive young women and then kills them by crashing his “death proof” stunt car into theirs.

Tarantino was inspired to make the movie after learning about how stunt men modify their vehicles so they can walk away from horrifying crashes.

And since he was looking for a car that could handle just about anything, it makes total sense that he chose a 1969 Charger.

The muscle car in the movie is painted black and has a skull on the hood to make it look even more intimidating.

If you’re hankering for an extreme car chase, Death Proof can definitely deliver. But be warned that it also serves up a serious amount of gore.

1969 Dodge Charger Daytona Fast and Furious 6 (2013)

By the sixth leg of the Fast and Furious journey, twelve years have passed, Toretto and his gang have become highly skilled heisters, and they’re all filthy rich thanks to a recent job in Rio.

However, money can’t buy you love, and several of the characters are feeling unfulfilled. Just in time, they are recruited to help take on an even more threatening group of bad guys. And Dom knows just the car for the job.

Ready for a street race, he shows up in a 430-horsepower Charger Daytona, one of seven models that were specially created for different scenes in the film.

There’s plenty of racing action, and spoiler alert, only three of the tailored Charger Daytonas made it through filming.

The cars you see in the movie are not exactly true to the original Charger Daytona which was modified specifically for racing back in the day.

The version that Dom drives had to be adjusted so it could work in the film. Though it still looks Daytona-ish, the nose was shortened, the rear wing was lowered, fixed headlights were used, and it was set on 18-inch wheels.
