November 26, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Dodge Viper sales have been on a run since the brand repositioned the limited-production hand-built super car in September, and Dodge is building on the momentum, opening the system for dealers to place sold customer orders of the newly equipped 2015.5 Dodge Viper GTS and TA 2.0 Special Edition, which join the SRT and GT models in the Viper lineup.

“The jump in Viper’s September sales after we announced the new $84,995 starting price showed that the overall repositioning to competitively price Viper with the first 1992 model was on target. But that was just the start,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO, Dodge and SRT. “Today, we’re expanding the Viper lineup by offering the track ready Viper TA 2.0 and GTS models with even more content. This limited-production hand-built super car is the flagship of the Dodge brand, and we will continue to show our commitment to its future.”

Reaching back into its 100-year history, Dodge is using the formula that successfully launched the original 1992 Dodge Viper, but with even more power, refinement and craftsmanship. Adjusting for inflation, the 2015 model year Viper is priced competitively to the first generation Viper, as calculated by Kelley Blue Book. When Viper was first introduced, the U.S. MSRP was $50,700, which equates to $86,130 in today’s dollars. In addition to the lower starting price, the hand-built American exotic now delivers an increased 645 horsepower and gets up to 20 miles per gallon.

Now, in addition to the SRT and GT models, customers can order the 2015.5 Viper TA 2.0 Special Edition and GTS models, both of which feature more standard content compared with the 2014 models they replace.

  • With a starting U.S. MSRP of $84,995, the 2015 Dodge Viper SRT features new accent stitching on the seats and instrument panel, Alcantara accents on the doors and instrument panel and ‘Viper’ badged aluminum sill plates. On the inside, the Viper features a 7-inch reconfigurable driver information display, 8.4-inch Uconnect Touch multimedia center with Parkview rear back-up camera, 3-D navigation with Sirius XM and Travel Link, SRT Performance Pages, launch control, 12-Speaker Harman Kardon audio system, three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, Keyless Enter ‘N Go, push-button start and power adjustable pedals
  • With a starting U.S. MSRP of $94,995, the new for 2015 Viper GT model features Nappa leather seats with Alcantara inserts, Alcantara accents on the doors and IP, ‘Viper’ badged aluminum sill plates, two-mode sport suspension, five-mode ESC, ‘GTS’ hood, two-piece StopTech slotted rotors, red Brembo brake calipers and power six-way driver seat
  • With a starting U.S. MSRP of $101,995, the TA 2.0 Special Edition features a high-performance Aero Package, competition rear spoiler and front lower dive planes for increased downforce and improved handling on the track, two-piece Brembo Rotors, 18/19-inch Matte Black Sidewinder Wheels, Pirelli P Zero Corsa Tires, dual-mode suspension, five-mode ESC, black Brembo brakes with orange lettering, performance brake pads, carbon fiber structural X-Brace, rear carbon fiber applique, TA front splitter, TA aero wing assembly kit, TA front decal, TA sill decal, interior accent stitching and car cover
  • With a starting U.S. MSRP of $107,995, the 2015 Dodge Viper GTS features many of the customer preferred “options,” now as standard content, such as Laguna leather seats, Alcantara headliner and Harman Kardon 18-speaker sound system, as well as a Nappa leather IP, console and doors, 18/19-inch polished aluminum Venom wheels, power six-way driver and passenger seats, unique GTS badging. December 2, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Esquire magazine has named the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, America’s most fuel-efficient pickup, its Truck of the Year. The announcement is highlighted in Esquire’s December issue.

Esquire’s editors consider all potential truck models in the U.S. market, balancing attributes with conventional touchstones that outline what makes a great truck, such as efficiency, functionality, versatility, safety, value and style.

“Recognition from Esquire magazine is proof that pickups have found their way into a variety of lifestyles,” said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO—Ram Truck Brand. “In such a competitive market, we are thrilled to earn a ‘Truck of the Year’ title from Esquire. The Ram 1500 delivers with a winning combination of best-in-class fuel economy and capability and going forward, Ram will continue to set the pace with the best trucks in their segments.”

The EcoDiesel-powered Ram 1500 earned a 28 mpg rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the best highway-cycle test result ever achieved by a full-size, half-ton pickup. It also exceeds the EPA highway rating for the top-ranked small pickup. The previous half-ton fuel efficiency record was set by the Ram 1500 with the available 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 gasoline engine at 25 mpg highway.

“This is where the truck tide turns: a full-sized American pickup with a just-big-enough diesel V-6—the only one of its kind,” Esquire magazine noted. “You get the fuel economy of a small engine, the pulling power of a larger one and the grumble of a working-class diesel.”

Ram 1500—the most recognizable pickup on the road—delivers best-in-class fuel economy with a truckload of pioneering, fuel-saving systems and first-in-segment technologies: TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, stop-start system, thermal management system, pulse-width modulation and active aerodynamics, including grille shutters and air suspension. The Ram 1500 delivers an outstanding combination of best-in-class fuel efficiency, unsurpassed torque and a surplus of towing capability.

Ram truck offers models designed for a wide range of buyers, including outdoorsmen, tradesmen, first-time buyers and ranchers. Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Laramie Limited trims are designed to meet the high expectations of affluent pickup truck buyers looking to combine capability with sophistication. Featuring premium materials, such as full-leather seating, real wood interior components and modish design, Ram offers a refined luxury alternative uncommon in pickups.

All-new 2015 Dodge Challenger Earns Five-Star Overall Safety Rating From U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

December 18, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Five stars is the highest possible safety rating given by NHTSA.

“The new Dodge Challenger coupe further demonstrates our commitment to broaden the proliferation of advanced safety technologies, such as driver-assist features,” says Scott Kunselman, Senior Vice President-Vehicle Safety and Regulatory, FCA-North America.

In its assessment of the new Challenger, NHTSA notes the availability of Forward Collision Warning (FCW), which features forward-facing sensors programmed to detect the potential for certain types of frontal collisions. If detected, the driver is alerted with visual and audible warnings.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger is the only car in its segment with such capability.

FCW is among more than 70 available safety and security features on the 2015 Dodge Challenger. Others include Blind-Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Path Detection, which was pioneered by FCA US LLC.

Among the individual crash-tests in which the Challenger scored five stars were front- and side-impacts.

“The 2015 Challenger checks all the boxes,” Kunselman says. “It affords premium safety and security in a stylish package that delivers a sporty driving experience.”

And it does so for $26,995, excluding tax, destination and title.

Building on the 2014-model’s legacy of honors that include Edmunds.com’s Best Retained Value Award and winner three years’ running J.D. Power’s APEAL Award for overall ownership enjoyment, the 2015 Dodge Challenger ups its game with:

  • New 1971-inspired exterior and interior design features
  • An unmatched array of personalization options, including a wide range of colors, stripes and wheels to create the perfect combination of fun, nostalgia and power
  • Segment-first and segment-exclusive TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, which delivers world-class precision and up to an 11 percent improvement in fuel economy, compared with the outgoing gearbox
  • Significant new technology upgrades such as the all-new Uconnect Access system with standard touchscreen, standard new 7-inch multi-view TFT gauge cluster, new performance electronic shifter, Keyless Enter ‘n Go with push-button start.

Last month, the Challenger recorded its best-ever November sales total with 4,157 deliveries. That’s a 52-percent jump compared with the same month in 2013.

Where is the Eco-Boost on Wards Best Engine List?

$
0
0

Ward’s List of the best engines was released recently and Ward’s explained why they did not make the cut.

2.7L EcoBoost V-6: This all-new F-150 pickup engine is compelling for several reasons, particularly the “hybrid” block construction that uses compacted-graphite iron for the upper part and aluminum for the bottom, as well as aluminum heads with integrated exhaust manifolds.

There are lots of interesting technologies onboard, from the fracture-split connecting rods and variable-displacement oil pump to the structural die-cast front engine cover and deep-set fuel injectors capable of four spurts per combustion event.

Don’t forget the smooth-functioning stop/start system, the composite oil pan, the recycled-material composite cam covers, the premium polymer-coated main and connecting-rod bearings for low NVH or the twin turbochargers with inlet swirl vanes for flow initiation.

This all-new engine architecture incorporates the type of technologies we seek to reward, and this V-6 performs reasonably well, propelling the F-150 with ease and remaining remarkably quiet and composed.

But there’s a big problem: The observed fuel economy is not that good. The EPA says this engine should get 26 mpg (9 L/100 km) on the highway with 2-wheel drive. Our 4×4 supercab never got close to that, even under a light foot.

Several editors drove the truck for 253 miles (407 km), and the trip computer displayed a low of 17.6 mpg (13.3 L/100 km) and a high of 19 mpg (12.3 L/100 km).

We checked consumption old-school (253 miles divided by 16.16 gallons [61 L] to refill the tank) and came up with an even more disappointing figure: 15.6 mpg (15 L/100 km).

Fuel economy has become a significant measurable as we select Ward’s 10 Best Engines, so it’s difficult to ignore numbers like these.

This engine has impressive power and torque (325 hp and 375 lb.-ft.[508 Nm]). But heck, we’ve driven 5.0L V-8 F-150s that delivered better mileage.

Devoting resources to an aluminum-intensive pickup might pay off in the long run. But no matter how much weight you trim from a fullsize truck chassis, a smallish V-6 will require much work from its twin-turbochargers, which hurts fuel economy.

2.3L EcoBoost I-4: Again, it’s a good effort, yielding 310 hp from this engine derived from the 2.0L EcoBoost already seen across the Ford portfolio. It has an all-new block, and it runs on regular unleaded fuel, just like the F-150 2.7L V-6.

Compelling technologies include a twin-scroll low-inertia turbocharger (a first for Ford) and high-pressure fuel injectors with six holes laser-drilled to help atomize spray into the combustion chamber.

The 2.3L EcoBoost goes hard when called upon, capable of a 60-mph (97 km/h) sprint in 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 145 mph (233 km/h).

In this case, fuel economy was no deal-breaker. Some editors managed 25 mpg (9.4 L/100 km).

The problem with this new Mustang engine is that it doesn’t sound like it belongs in a pony car. Mustangs and muscle-cars in general put off a vibe, even when they’re sitting at a stop light, burbling along, alerting the world that a foot to the floor will ignite fireworks. Even if the driver never runs wide-open throttle, knowing he can is what keeps him in a Mustang.

Start up the 2.3L in the new Mustang, and it sounds thin and even weak, like a pedestrian family hauler. Crank up the revs, and it becomes more engaging. But part of the Mustang’s allure is a great exhaust note no matter how it’s driven.

We asked Ford about this and learned that engineering the Mustang for global markets meant turning down the volume to meet decibel requirements in other parts of the world. So there’s a downside to globalization.

On the upside, the quiet 2.3L EcoBoost is well-suited for the Lincoln MKC utility vehicle, the only other vehicle getting this engine for now.

1.5L EcoBoost I-4: This fuel-sipper in the Fusion is likable, but it’s supposed to be a low-cost replacement for a hybrid. We hoped it would have done better than 29 mpg (8.1 L/100 km), which was the best mileage any WardsAuto editor achieved.

3.2L Power Stroke diesel I-5: The massive Transit van uses this engine, and anyone needing to move a storeful of refrigerators will find it outstanding. It’s reasonably quiet, considering the inside of this truck is like a drum.

Perhaps it wasn’t fair comparing it with the Ram diesel, which clearly is designed for passenger duty. The Transit I-5 delivered admirable fuel economy for a truck this size, averaging 19 mpg (12.3 L/100 km).

New 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel Makes a Statement

January 13, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The new 2015 Ram 1500 Rebel brings a one-of-a-kind off-road design to the full-size truck segment.

“Offering an off-road-style package on the Ram 1500 has been on our to-do list for some time but the right combination didn’t present itself until now,” said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO — Ram Truck Brand, FCA US LLC. “The Rebel drops right into a core segment of the truck market with unique design cues and can-do attitude backed by Ram Truck engineering.”

New exterior design highlights
Rebel features an all-new grille with prominent billet silver “RAM” letter badge. Departing from the brand’s iconic “cross-hair” designs, the blacked-out Rebel grille tops a completely new black off-road front bumper design with a durable powder-coated surface, which incorporates a powder coated, billet silver skid plate, new front tow hooks and new LED fog lamps. Black bezel bi-functional projector headlamps with LED marker lights lie beneath an aluminum, twin-snorkel sport hood.

Rebel’s blacked-out front-end continues on the flanks, where black Power Wagon wheel-arch moldings, flat-black badge, mirrors and lower body panels create a distinctive trail-ready presence. The new trim features a two-tone paint scheme with black as a constant on the lower body, front to rear.

The Ram 1500 Rebel features an all-new 17-inch aluminum wheel. Among the most elaborate designs found in mass production, the new one-piece wheel incorporates matte black painted accent pockets and multi-angled surfaces linked to the Rebel’s off-road bias.

Continuing around to the rearview is a bold new “RAM” stamped tailgate with blacked-out lettering. The “Rebel” and “4X4” badge emphasize the truck’s uniqueness. The rear bumper is also treated with durable black powder coating with flared cutouts around dual chrome-tipped exhausts. Tail lamps incorporate black bezels to match forward lighting.

Rebel includes an optional backup camera, providing a better field of vision when maneuvering. A new tri-fold tonneau cover is embossed with the Ram logo.

The Ram 1500 Rebel will be available in five colors, including: Granite Crystal Metallic, Bright Silver Metallic, Flame Red, Bright White and Brilliant Black. Both monotone and two-tone paint options are offered.

Unique interior detailing
Inside, Rebel is every bit as brawny and rugged as it is outside, featuring dramatic, industry-exclusive seating elements.

High-durability technical grain vinyl seats are finished in Radar Red and Black with Sedoso fabric inserts embossed with the Toyo tire tread pattern, matching the Rebel’s actual footprint. Standard heated front seats feature Light Diesel Gray accent stitching, Radar Red Ram’s head embroidery on the headrests and Black with Light Diesel Gray Rebel nameplate embroidered on upper seat bolsters.

The all-black instrument panel, door armrests and logo-embossed center console armrest cover are topped with two-tone Radar Red and Light Gray accent stitching. The center stack and console are finished in Iron Gray Metallic paint giving a cast-iron appearance. An all-new center console bin incorporates a cellular phone/tablet holder with molded insert allowing for various-sized devices. Radar Red anodized vent rings, door accent rings, door trim spears and center console trim ring add color detail to the interior. The Rebel’s heated steering wheel is wrapped with semi-perforated black leather, accented with Radar Red X-stitches.

The upper glove box door is finished with a Rebel nameplate badge.

Deep all-weather rubber floor mats with contrasting Radar Red Ram’s head help contain dirt, snow and debris.

The interior is finished off with a new black headliner and matching upper pillars.

Performance Updates
The Rebel’s trail-running capability gets a boost with 1.0-inch raised ride height for improved off-road approach, departure and breakover angles.

Bilstein supplies front and rear shocks with unique tuning and a new steering calibration is matched to the Rebel’s increased ride height. A softer rear stabilizer bar provides improved dynamics.

Beefy 33-inch (LT285/70R17E) Toyo Open Country A/T all-terrain tires are mounted to the all-new 17-inch silver and black cast aluminum wheels.

A new tire offering for Ram trucks, the Open Country A/Ts are versatile all-terrain tires designed for rugged good looks, all-season handling and a comfortable ride. Their aggressive tread pattern offers good traction in bad conditions, on pavement or off. They feature a special wavy sipe arrangement for a comfortable ride and improved snow traction; groove bottom siping for more biting edges for increased traction in the snow and an open shoulder that maximizes water evacuation for excellent all-terrain traction and stability.

The Rebel takes advantage of Ram’s exclusive air suspension system with a 1.0-inch factory suspension lift, which not only helps to clear the 33-inch tires but also contributes to additional ground clearance. A modified alignment of the independent front suspension appropriately adjusts tire angle and aluminum lower A-arms absorb the load. The combination of larger tires and a suspension lift yield best-in-class ground clearance of 10.3 inches, and a new stability program calibration takes Rebel’s modifications into consideration.

Rebel is available exclusively as a crew cab model with 5-ft. 7-inch bed length. Both 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter HEMI powertrains are offered, as is a choice of either 4X2 (HEMI only) or 4X4 configurations. RamBox is optional.

Ram Rebel is the 10th member of the Ram truck lineup, which includes Tradesman, Express, SLT, Big Horn/Lone Star, Outdoorsman, Sport, Laramie, Longhorn and Limited.

Rebel goes on sale early in the second half of 2015.

Powertrain

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine (Ward’s 10 Best Engines Award winner three years in a row) with variable-valve timing (VVT) offers 305 horsepower, 269 lb.-ft. of torque and best-in-class gasoline fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon (mpg).

The legendary 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 with fuel-saving cylinder shut-off and VVT provide 395 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque.

HEMI-powered Ram 1500 Rebel trucks are available in 4×2 or 4×4 powertrains with 3.92 or 3.21 gear ratios. When equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, Rebel is available in 4×4 only with a 3.92 gear ratio, allowing the engine to leverage its power and torque.

Both the 3.6-liter V-6 and 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engines are available with a rear anti-spin differential, which turns both rear wheels in tandem when increased torque is applied – helpful in off-road driving conditions. The design automatically unlocks the differential for normal on-road driving, allowing the wheels to spin independently for improved drivability.

The class-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission (TorqueFlite 8) – standard equipment with the Rebel’s 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar and 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engines, which improves drivability and enhances fuel efficiency.

The 2015 Ram 1500 has established what is unmistakably the most advanced and efficient truck in the light-duty category, as evidenced by:

  • Best-in-class fuel economy at 28 mpg with 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6
  • Exclusive link coil rear suspension and optional 4-corner air suspension
  • Only manufacturer in light-duty class to offer diesel, gasoline, and flex-fuel
    (E85 capable 3.6-liter V-6) engines

Unsurpassed powertrain warranty – five years/100,000 miles
The 2015 Ram 1500 is backed with a five-year /100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty. The powertrain-limited warranty covers the cost of all parts and labor needed to repair a covered powertrain component – engine, transmission and drive system. Coverage also includes free towing to the nearest Ram dealer, if necessary. The warranty also is transferable, allowing customers who sell their truck during the warranty period to pass the coverage onto the new owner.

The standard three-year / 36,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty provides bumper-to-bumper coverage for the Ram 1500, from the body to the electrical system.

Quality
The 2015 Ram 1500’s quality is scrutinized at the company’s Chrysler Technology Center’s state-of-the-art scientific labs in Auburn Hills, Michigan, including the Noise/Vibration/Harshness Lab, Electromagnetic Compatibility Facility, Wind Tunnel and the Road Test Simulator (RTS).

For example, the RTS recreates the abuse a truck endures at the hands of a 95th percentile driver – meaning someone who drives the vehicle in more severe conditions than 95 percent of all customers. The RTS can put a lifetime of wear and tear on a truck in about one month’s time. The Ram development team is committed to finding and fixing any issues before the customer does.

Manufacturing
The 2015 Ram 1500 is built at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant (Warren, Michigan), which has built more than 12.5 million trucks since it started operations in 1938. Crew Cab and Regular Cab models of the 2015 Ram 1500 are built at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Saltillo, Mexico.

January 13, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Ram Truck brand today announced that it will add a new, more fuel-efficient model to its half-ton truck lineup and further extend its claim on the industry’s highest fuel efficiency rating.

The 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE will deliver the highest fuel economy among all fullsize truck competitors — 12 percent higher than the next-closest competitor. Its “HFE” designation is Ram’s way of highlighting this model’s excellent fuel efficiency.

Ram EcoDiesel HFE gets an EPA-certified 29 mpg highway fuel economy rating. EcoDiesel HFE’s city and combined mpgs are 21 and 24, respectively, also highest among all pickups.

“Fuel efficiency is at the top of truck buyers’ priorities, and Ram is the recognized benchmark for the industry,” said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand. “Twenty-nine miles per gallon cuts through the clutter. Ram invested in powertrain technologies and those are paying real dividends in the wallets of our customers.”

The fuel economy king features a unique trim package on the popular Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab four-door body, with a 6-ft. 4-in. bed and 20-inch wheels.  The Ram EcoDiesel also is available with a body-colored fascia adopted from the Ram Express model, which gives the Ram EcoDiesel HFE a sporty exterior appearance not offered on other EcoDiesel-powered Ram 1500s. Class-exclusive wheel-to-wheel side steps and a tri-fold tonneau cover offer owners a double-bonus: greater functionality and best-in-class aerodynamics contributing to better fuel efficiency.

“The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel delivers dominant fuel efficiency across five configurations and nine trims,” said Mike Cairns, Director – Ram Truck Engineering. “The Quad Cab is a widely purchased configuration which delivers the best aero benefit of any half-ton truck.”

Ram 1500 EcoDiesel HFE models will also get a new HFE badge that heralds its MPG claims.

The EcoDiesel HFE will go on sale late first quarter of 2015.

Ram 1500 — the most recognizable pickup on the road — delivers best-in-class fuel economy with a truckload of pioneering, fuel-saving systems and first-in-segment technologies: TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, stop-start system, thermal management system, pulse-width modulation and active aerodynamics, including grille shutters and air suspension. The Ram 1500 delivers an outstanding combination of best-in-class fuel efficiency, unsurpassed torque and a surplus of towing capability.

The EcoDiesel-powered Ram 1500 earned a 29 mpg rating from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the best highway-cycle test result ever achieved by a full-size, half-ton pickup. It also exceeds the EPA highway rating for the top-ranked small pickup.

Jeep Wrangler Stand Out In CBB ‘Best Retained Value’ Awards

“2015’s award winners were also highlighted by the Jeep Wrangler out in front with the best retained value of any vehicle.”

Canadian Black Book released the results of its annual “Best Retained Value” Awards this evening, in time for the kickoff of the Canadian International Autoshow in Toronto on Friday.

This year’s awards took a look at 2011 model-year vehicles, with Toyota taking home the most awards this time around. And not surprisingly, the Jeep Wrangler once again saw the strongest price retention on the roads.

The Wrangler retained almost 70 percent of its original MSRP after four years, the most impressive retention performance out of all 2011 model-year vehicles sold in Canada.

The unit was recognized once again as a first-place finisher in the compact SUV category for the fifth consecutive year.

What factors continue to push the Wrangler to above-average retention performance? Bailey said the addition of the four-door model in 2008 pushed the unit even further ahead.

“They were always really good, but now it’s expanded into a whole different world. And with the whole industry shifting toward that sport utility angle, this is kind of the ultimate choice. It is the icon of off-roading,” Bailey said. “When you put that on top of the overall trends in the market,  that is one of the reasons that the Wrangler fares so well.”

Winter Testing Season at Ram Truck

Piles of snow and below-zero temperatures in Houghton, Mich., Bemidji, Minn., Ottawa, Ontario, and other hostile winter areas are the cue for Ram Engineering to suit up and run severe cold weather and plow testing. Every year, the dedicated truck engineering teams take advantage of the naturally reoccurring elements to reproduce the harsh environments like those in Ottawa, Ontario that customers and operators experience. Although the conditions are far from humanly comfortable, those folks running a “Cold Trip” could not ask for a finer setting.
“Only a small percentage of Ram truck owners will subject their truck or van to the harshest winter conditions, but for those who do our durability testing procedures instill confidence,” said Mike Cairns, Director of Ram Truck Engineering. “When it’s minus 20 outside and I walk up to my Ram Truck on a morning of a Ottawa winter, I have a sense of self-reliance and assurance that my truck will start, warm up quickly and run well because I know that we have tested and verified our trucks to perform in these harsh environments. We want every Ram customer to feel that way.”

The Cold Trip
Ram Engineering conducts a multitude of lab tests at the company’s Technical Center in Michigan and full vehicle tests at the company’s two major proving grounds in Arizona and Michigan. The purpose of the Cold Trip is to run real world operational tests in extreme environments. The Cold Trip serves as the engineering team’s final validation, assuring all Ram trucks are fully capable and the components will withstand the harshest environments in the United States and Canada. Being based in Michigan offers a naturally cold environment for testing but the northern region amplifies the experience. Houghton, Mich., not only provides below zero temps, it also is home to a testing facility dedicated to the winter bloom. The team also travels to Bemidji, Minn., to experience extreme cold, where the trucks soak in frigid below-zero temps for extended periods of time.

Slush test
When deicer is spread on the road in temperatures around 28 degrees Fahrenheit, slush can collect. Because slush is water during an in-between state of liquid and solid it can shift either way, but when the sun goes down and temperatures drop, solid has the advantage. Slush does not drip off the undercarriage. It hangs on, filling gaps and covering components. During a hard freeze, anything covered in slush becomes encased in ice — fuel lines, diesel exhaust fluid tanks, engine oil pan, brakes, etc. Ram engineers run trucks through 12-inch-deep slush and immediately park the truck overnight in a refrigeration facility set at minus 20 degrees. The truck is then inspected top to bottom to assure components and systems are functioning properly. Ram trucks feature dedicated systems to protect areas of potential vulnerability. For example, the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank is allowed to freeze in such conditions. The tank and lines are made of materials to allow a hard freeze without breaking. An independent heating system keeps just enough DEF above freezing temperatures to allow engine start up while meeting tailpipe emissions. Another example is the location of vent lines. Water can freeze, clogging vent lines for the axles, transmission and transfer case. Windows must continue to roll up and down. More importantly, windshield wipers and defrost mechanisms must function.

Arctic blast
Anyone who has walked across a windy parking lot in low temperature conditions knows the effects. Imagine that force at higher wind speeds and even lower temps while delivering a healthy dose of snow and ice. That’s exactly what Ram executes during the arctic blast test. Ram engineers create a convoy of trucks and drive in-line for hours on end, switching positions in the order. The leader pulls a “drag” or rake to kick up ice and snow. This test addresses performance of windshield wipers, lighting, defrost and systems related to the engine.

Snow ingestion can be particularly bad in such conditions. Similar to driving though a sandstorm, snow can pack the truck’s air filter and air box, limiting the truck’s “breathing” capabilities. If the intake system is compromised it will dramatically reduce engine performance. It is important to place the engine’s air intake in a location that avoids an over exuberance of snow ingestion. Alternatively, areas such as Arizona in the summer can create a need for the air intake to be present at the front of the truck for maximum flow of cooler air. The industry-exclusive Ram Active Air intake system addresses both scenarios. When the intake system senses extreme heat it draws cooler air from the front of the vehicle – a function that also engages at high altitudes for superior throttle response in low-oxygen environments. When conditions are wet from snow, ice or water fording, the system pulls air from an under-hood inlet, clear from snow packing and water.

Moving white stuff
Each season, Ram engineers plow more than 10,000 tons of snow to validate every system and ensure reliable operation. Moving a large amount of snow is paramount to a plow operator, which is why more than 80 percent of commercial and private plow trucks are ¾-ton or greater. Although the Ram 2500 and 3500 are very popular for such duties, Ram also sells a large number of Chassis Cab trucks for snow removal. Ram 2500 and 3500 are available with a Snow Chief Package, which includes:

  • Upgraded cooling system
  • Higher-amp alternator
  • Anti-spin differential
  • More robust front suspension
  • Plow lighting interface eliminates the need for a lighting harness and enables plow lights to override the headlights upon plow installation
  • Transfer case skid plates
  • Auxiliary switches to operate the plow
  • Clearance lamps
  • OWL 18″ tires

All Chassis Cab trucks come standard with heavy duty cooling, auxiliary switches, limited slip rear axle, clearance lamps and 3500 (optional on/off road 4×4 tires) and 4500/5500 (rear traction tires on 4×4).

Ram Chassis Cab 3500 4×4 is available with a Snow Plow Prep Package, which includes:

  • Higher-amp alternator
  • Transfer case skid plate

Ram Chassis Cab 4500 and 5500 4×4 and 4×2 are available with a Snow Plow Prep Package, which includes:

  • Higher-amp alternator
  • Transfer case skid plate
  • Heavy Duty front suspension group

The front Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) is the dictating specification for how much weight can be attached to the front of the truck. Front GAWR is the maximum allowable weight on the front two tires of the truck, including added equipment (winch, PTO, plow, rack, etc.). Plow operators balance plow size with truck weight, traction and power. Ram 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cabs are rated for up to 7,000 pounds of front GAWR on 6.4-liter gas engine-equipped models and up to 7,250 pounds GAWR on 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel models, allowing for the largest plow in the segment.

Before you can use a piece of equipment on your truck, it needs to be installed. Ram Truck has benefitted from a long-standing relationship with truck equipment manufacturers. Our pickups, vans and chassis cab trucks are known for upfitter friendliness.

Not every plow is brand new and there are a variety of plows available. Ram engineering tests trucks with new and “experienced” plows — some with minor damage, V-plows and straight plows, to assure a range of use and equipment is covered.

Operating at maximum front GAWR is a sure way to push the trucks. The largest possible plows are used, matched with each truck’s capability. Plow truck operators often take multiple passes in a small area, pushing forward and reversing out, only to make another push. The engineering team has logged a staggering amount of plow miles pushing snow and nearly an equal amount in reverse. That type of use can be punishing for a transmission and Ram has included the actions in the durability schedule.

Additional weight (about 500 pounds) is mounted over the rear axle, in the bed, to help maintain rear tire traction and counter the hanging weight of the plow on the front of the truck. This also presents an opportunity to test tires in low-traction environments. Heavy Duty trucks normally carry tire pressures upward of 70 psi, which isn’t always helpful when trying to gain traction while pushing mounds of snow.

It is important to be sure that your truck is up to the harsh winters here in Ottawa, and RAM trucks are defanitly up to the task! Come in to Ottawa Dodge for the largest selection of New and Used Trucks in the area!

Heritage and high-impact exterior colors for the 2015 Dodge Challenger Shaker model range include B5 Blue, Sublime Green and TorRed. Other factory colors include Billet Silver Metallic, Bright White, Pitch Black and Granite Crystal Metallic.

Dodge continues to build on the Scat Pack legacy
In 1968, Dodge united the brand’s performance vehicle enthusiasts through the creation of the “Scat Pack Club.” The Scat Pack Club quickly transformed and expanded from an enthusiast club, into an over-arching Dodge performance philosophy. This shared philosophy ultimately evolved into the desire for even more performance. Dodge and Mopar brands partnered to respect this need by delivering factory-engineered performance stage kits that would ultimately become known as “Scat Packs.”

For the 2015 model year, the all-new 2015 Challenger R/T Scat Pack and 392 HEMI Scat Pack Shaker models were created to deliver even more performance to the Dodge lineup. With a best-in-class 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque, track-ready performance features, heritage styling and the availability of the class-exclusive TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission – these two Challenger models are targeted directly at hardcore Dodge enthusiasts.

The editors of Four Wheeler have named the Ram Power Wagon “2015 Pickup Truck of the Year.”

“Factory-built and engineered, our Power Wagon is, by far, the most capable off-road pickup available in production,” said Bob Hegbloom, President and CEO of Ram Truck Brand — FCA US LLC. “The Four Wheeler magazine staff is loaded with off-road expertise. We’re honored that they have again named the Ram Power Wagon with their Pickup Truck of the Year award.”

To qualify for the competition, a vehicle must have been entirely new or have substantial mechanical revisions from a previous model year.  The award winning Ram Power Wagon features a 6.4-liter HEMI with best-in-class 410 horsepower and 428 lb.-ft. of torque. A class-exclusive 5-link rear suspension system was added and the front suspension is uniquely modified with Ram’s “Articulink” to allow additional axle flex and traction.

“The 2015 Ram Power Wagon is simply everything you want a real pickup to be,” said Christian Hazel, Editor of Four Wheeler. “Plenty of power and load-carrying capability for hauling and towing, well-appointed interior comfort and convenience features, great on-road ride and handling, and jaw-dropping capability in virtually any off-road terrain. The Ram Power Wagon didn’t just win Four Wheeler’s 2015 Pickup Truck of the Year, it blew the competition away.”

The 2015 Ram Power Wagon is based on the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty 4×4 Crew Cab, but features a number of off-road-specific engineering enhancements, which give the truck a significant advantage over all production pickups.

Vehicles participating in the annual Four Wheeler Pickup Truck of the Year competition were subjected to a week of rigorous testing in five key areas: Trail Performance, Empirical Data, On-Pavement Performance, Interior, and Exterior. Visit FourWheeler.com to learn more about the 2015 Four Wheeler Pickup Truck of the Year competition.

POWERTRAIN
Compelling numbers tell the best-in-class story of the standard 6.4-liter HEMI 16-valve V-8 engine: 410 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and a peak torque rating of 429 lb.-ft. (582 N•m) at 4,000 rpm. The engine calibration is unique to Power Wagon in order to enhance its off-road maneuverability and finesse. When driving in four-wheel-drive “Low,” the throttle response softens and the idle speed increases by 100 rpm (from 650 to 750 rpm) — providing added control when ascending and descending off-road obstacles at slow speeds.

The 2015 Ram Power Wagon is equipped with Fuel Saver technology, delivering more power yet better fuel efficiency than previous generations. When conditions allow, as in highway cruising, the Fuel Saver system seamlessly shuts down four cylinders to conserve fuel.

The engine also features an active dual-runner-length intake manifold optimized specifically for the Ram Heavy Duty lineup. The result is improved low-end torque without sacrificing high-end power.

The 6.4-liter HEMI is offered with the 66RFE six-speed automatic transmission and connects to a part-time, manual-engagement BorgWarner BW 44-47 transfer case.

Built by American Axle Manufacturing, the axles measure 9.25 inches in the front and 11.5 inches in the rear (increase from 10.5 inches), delivering power via a 4.10:1 ring and pinion ratio. Robust rear axle shafts are upgraded to 38 mm, providing rotating force directly to the 33-inch tire/wheel combination. Both axles include electronic locking differentials driven by electro-magnetic actuators. All Ram Heavy Duty trucks incorporate a segment-exclusive front axle disconnect system to reduce parasitic loss and improve overall efficiency.

Additional axle data:

FRONT                                                                  REAR
9.25 AAM                                                            11.5 AAM
Front Pinion:  98.3 mm                                        Rear Pinion:  121.3 mm
Front Ring Gear:  235 mm (9.25 inches)             Rear Ring Gear:  292 mm (11.5 inches)
Front Axle Shaft Diameter:  35 mm                     Rear Axle Shaft Diameter:  38 mm

SUSPENSION
The Ram Heavy Duty features a unique suspension system, some of which was specifically engineered for the Power Wagon, including Bilstein shocks at all four corners, control arms, spring rates and more than two inches of lift.

In the front, the entire Ram Heavy Duty line features an advanced three-link front suspension to ensure roll stiffness. The Ram Power Wagon packages a unique-to-model design of the standard three-link suspension system. The Ram Articulink design incorporates high movement joints at the control-arm-to-axle mount, allowing for additional flexibility and axle articulation. Additional suspension flex is achieved via the class-exclusive electronic disconnecting sway bar, which allows the front axle to move more independently of the truck’s frame.

Heavy Duty trucks generally have rear suspension equipped for constant, heavy payloads. This usually leads to a harsher ride when unloaded. All Ram 2500 Heavy Duty trucks, including the Power Wagon, feature an exclusive five-link coil design provides better articulation over obstacles than a leaf spring system. The robust coil springs are more than up to the task of handling heavy payloads. Although the 2015 Ram Power Wagon is loaded with off-road components, owners appreciate payload up to 1,490 pounds and towing capacity up to 10,810 pounds.

The 2015 Ram Power Wagon’s combined axle and suspension package adds to greater suspension articulation, a determining factor when negotiating extreme obstacles. With Smart Bar engaged, the Ram Power Wagon reaches a Ramp Travel Index (RTI – a measurement of a vehicle’s suspension articulation) of 510 (26-inch vertical height).

GROUND CLEARANCE AND PROTECTION
Providing optimal balance between on-road civility and off-road capability are 33-inch tires, which feature a beefy tread pattern to help grab ledges along the trail and deliver optimum traction through sand, mud and snow. Larger tires and a suspension lift contribute to the Power Wagon’s 14.5-inch ground clearance, compared to 12 inches on the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty. The truck’s approach angle is boosted to 34 degrees, the departure angle is increased to 23.5 degrees and the breakover angle is enhanced to 25.5 degrees. This gives the Ram Power Wagon significant clearance for navigating a variety of severe inclines and declines as well as providing up to 30-inches of water-fording capability.

Underneath the Ram Power Wagon are generous underbody protection components. Fore-aft bars bring together the transfer case and fuel tank skid plates, resulting in armor that minimizes underside damage and rock wedging.

Ultimate truck capability is now available in three trim levels: Tradesman, SLT and Laramie. The Ram Power Wagon Tradesman offers off-road enthusiasts all of the Power Wagon’s legendary capability in a value-oriented package. The Power Wagon SLT provides a mix of comfort with off-road components and the Power Wagon Laramie offers more comfort and luxury features. Each of the three Ram Power Wagon models has its own distinctive look.

The Power Wagon nameplate was produced from 1945 through 1980. Early trucks were based on the Weapons Carrier (WC) series of Dodge ¾-ton military-use trucks built during World War II. The Power Wagon went on to become a well-known civilian vehicle and continued the lineage of Dodge four-wheel-drive trucks from the 1930s, proving basic four-wheel-drive design concepts and representing a significant predecessor to the many four-wheel-drive trucks in modern use today. The iconic truck was reintroduced in 2005 and now exists as an independent model under Ram Truck Brand.

The RAM Power Wagon is only available at certifired RAM dealers in Ottawa, Ontario Canada such as Otawa Chrysler Jeep RAM
